History of the city of Roissy in France

The city of Roissy-en-France was once an old farming village renowned for its fertile land. It still preserves the remnants of the castle where several lords resided for centuries. Roissy-en-France is a small commune in the Val-d'Oise department in the Île-de-France region, located 25 km from Paris. In the fifteenth century, it was the domain of Jean Jouvenel des Ursins before gaining global recognition in 1974 with the establishment of the international airport Paris-Roissy-Charles de Gaulle. This village, situated on the outskirts of Paris-CDG airport, was once the fiefdom of renowned lords who frequented the court of the Kingdom of France. Among them was Jean-Jacques de Mesmes (1490-1569), the First President of the Parliament of Normandy. His descendant, Jean-Antoine de Mesmes, commissioned the construction of a new castle on the site in 1704 under the supervision of the famous architect of that time, Germain Boffrand (the chief engineer of bridges and roads, responsible for the Castle of the Dukes of Lorraine, Castle of Aulnois, etc.). In 1719, the estate came into the possession of financier John Law before being transferred to Antoine de Portail, the first president of the Court of Parliament. After the Revolution in 1790, Roissy became an independent commune, with Maurice Gabriel Joseph de Caraman, a native of the village and the son of Victor-Maurice Riquet, count of Caraman and the last lord of the area, serving as its first mayor. The castle was eventually completely destroyed due to the vandalism that ensued during popular uprisings and the Reign of Terror. In 1814, the Russian armies looted the city and mistreated its inhabitants. It was in 1817, with the contribution of the village farmers, that Roissy-en-France acquired its first fire pump. The war of 1870 once again plunged the village into chaos. Faced with their defeat, French soldiers had to set everything ablaze along their path to prevent the crops from falling into the hands of the Prussians. The village was consequently plundered by the Prussian forces. After the Second World War, the city gradually regained its vibrancy, and the establishment of the airport marked a turning point in its history.
