Vincennes Castle

From Hunting Lodge to Royal Residence

Vincennes Castle is an important and iconic site in the Val-de-Marne department. It is a fortified city that once served as a royal residence. In the past, the forest of Vincennes was abundant with game, and King Louis VII developed a hunting lodge there from 1150. Under the reign of Philip Augustus (King of France from September 8, 1180, to July 14, 1223), the building was transformed into a manor house for the royal family. In the 14th century, Charles V initiated further developments, and the castle gained increased importance to the royal family. Philip III married there for his second wedding, while Kings Louis X (1316) and Charles IV (1328) died within its walls. Philip IV of Valois began fortifying the site and commissioned the construction of the Keep. Charles V made the greatest changes to the castle, transforming it into a residence and the seat of his government. The enclosure, gates, and towers were erected successively, and the construction of the Sainte-Chapelle of Vincennes commenced during the same period.

From Prison to Historical Defense Service

Over time, Vincennes Castle gradually became a temporary residence for the kings. It became the third royal residence, although Louis XIV favored the Palace of Versailles. In the early 17th century, the dungeon was converted into a prison for high-ranking prisoners.
