The Museum in Figures

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Val-de-Marne, or MAC/VAL, is dedicated to art from the post-war period to the present day. Located in the city of Vitry-sur-Seine, just four kilometres from Paris, the museum is a modern 13,000 m² building, complemented by a 10,000 m² public garden. It features a 4,000 m² exhibition hall, a 150-seat cinema, a documentation centre, art workshops, two artists' residences, and a restaurant. The Val-de-Marne Museum of Contemporary Art is the first of its kind in the Paris suburbs. Apart from its permanent display of 2,200 pieces of art, the museum also hosts 3 to 4 temporary exhibitions annually. It attracts around 70,000 visitors each year, 70% of whom are residents of the Val-de-Marne department.

What to See at the Val-de-Marne Contemporary Museum

First and foremost, MAC/VAL houses a collection of 2,200 works from French artists like Christian Boltanski, Ange Leccia, Agnes Varda, Claude Closky, Annette Messager, Melik Ohanian, Vladimir Skoda, and many others. Visitors have the option of taking a guided tour or exploring on their own with an audio guide. The museum visit is extremely enlightening and also offers a program for children. Besides the family visits offered at 4 pm every Sunday, children can also participate in workshops to learn about contemporary art, run by the artists themselves. Parents are welcome to join their children during these sessions. In addition to viewing contemporary artworks, individual visitors can participate in multi-sensory visits that encourage the use of senses beyond sight, such as touch and smell.
