The Saint-Étienne de Beauvais church is renowned for two distinct features: it is the juxtaposition of a Romanesque nave from the 12th and 13th centuries and a flamboyant Gothic choir from the 16th century with a very wide ambulatory. This church is primarily considered a museum of 16th-century stained glass. All the stained glass windows were crafted by masters of the time.

A true monument

The Saint-Étienne church of Beauvais is a parish Catholic church. Positioned irregularly north-west and south-east, the church is cruciform in plan and consists of a six-bay nave with aisles; a transept, each arm of which is largely overhanging and extends over two successive spans; a choir with a flat chevet of six spans accompanied by two collateral aisles and chapels; an axial chapel which extends beyond the chevet line; and a semi-bell tower, which occupies the location corresponding to the first two spans of the north aisle.

At the first level of the elevation, you will see semicircular arches with double rolls, embellished with rather austere capitals. On the second level of the elevation, you will observe a very elegant blind triforium which opens onto the central vessel through a series of twin bays included under a semicircular discharge arch. The south aisle of the nave is famous among historians of medieval architecture for its very early ribbed vaults which have never been altered. You will not miss the Tree of Jesse. This canopy is considered to be the masterpiece of Engrand Le Prince. Measuring 6.60m by 3.25m high, it was cut from its lower register in 1794 when revolutionaries broke through a door just below to facilitate the storage of grain. What adds value to this stained glass is the technique and style of Engrand Le Prince, who used quick touches of brown vitrifiable paint for the facial features. This technique resulted in incomparable effects and intensity.
