Colleville cemetery of the great war or Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery

Along Omaha Beach - the landing site of the Allies on June 06, 1944 - and a kilometer from the Channel, lies the American Cemetery in Colleville. The cemetery and its memorial were officially inaugurated in 1956, 11 years after the end of the War. It's worth noting, however, that a temporary cemetery in Saint-Laurent was established not far from it just two days after the landing.

Things to Know

Spanning 70 hectares, nearly 10,000 white gravestones are meticulously aligned. Each is dedicated to an American soldier who died during the Battle of Normandy in the Second World War. Among them are the graves of the two Roosevelts, Junior, who are buried side by side; one was killed by Germans during the First World War, the other died in July 1944. Following the main paths of the cemetery, one arrives at the center, where a circular chapel and a 7-meter tall bronze statue are situated.

More Than a Cemetery

The statue, "Spirit of the American Youth Rising from the Waves", represents the rebirth of American youth, and also pays tribute to the 1,557 missing soldiers. Their names are engraved on the rear of the colonnade that surrounds the statue. Four maps depicting military operations are on display: "Landing in Normandy", "Air Operations Over Normandy, March-August 1944", "June 6, 1944 Amphibious Assault Landings", and "Military Operations in Western Europe, June 6 - May 8, 1945". Each map retraces the steps of the event it describes, including naval attack plans and more.
