The Douaumont ossuary is a monument honoring the approximately 130,000 bodies, unidentified French and German soldiers. Indeed, a frightful battle took place in Verdun on February 21 until December 1916. That is to say a duration of 300 days and 300 nights of fighting which left several soldiers dead and torn to pieces. Without forgetting the different bodies of French and German soldiers who were missing. Or 300,000 bodies disappeared in total. It was in August 1920 that the first two stones of the building were installed, by Marshal PETAIN, as well as Monsignor Charles GINISTY. Subsequently, in September 1927, the Ossuary was transferred formally and definitively. A total of 52 coffins were transported, honoring the soldiers who died during the Battle of Verdun. And it was only in August 1932 that this monument was officially inaugurated by the President of the Republic Albert LEBRUN. You could then visit the places of meditation, namely the chapel and the cloister. But also, take a tour of the tower and the small museum, where you will have the opportunity to have a panoramic and breathtaking view of the battlefields. In addition, the Douaumont ossuary is showing a 20-minute film on the Battle of the Ossuary in Verdun. And so that everyone can understand what is said in the film, headsets are offered to visitors. These helmets then allow translations into English, German, Dutch, Russian and Chinese. The Douaumont ossuary is then an ideal place for people who like to learn about the history of the Battle of Verdun. It is also a place reminiscent of the First World War and the soldiers who died there for the security of their country.
