The Douaumont Ossuary is a monument dedicated to approximately 130,000 unidentified French and German soldiers. A horrific battle took place in Verdun from February 21 until December 1916, lasting 300 days and 300 nights of fighting, which left numerous soldiers dead and torn apart. This does not include various bodies of French and German soldiers who went missing, bringing the total to around 300,000 bodies lost. The first two stones of the building were laid in August 1920 by Marshal Petain and Monsignor Charles Ginisty. Subsequently, in September 1927, the ossuary was formally and permanently transferred. A total of 52 coffins, honouring the soldiers who died during the Battle of Verdun, were transported. It was not until August 1932 that this monument was officially inaugurated by the President of the Republic, Albert Lebrun. Visitors can explore the areas of meditation, namely the chapel and the cloister, as well as visit the tower and the small museum, where they can enjoy a panoramic and stunning view of the battlefields. Additionally, the Douaumont Ossuary presents a 20-minute film about the Battle of Verdun.
