History of Dieppe and its surroundings

Dieppe is a city situated on the northwestern coast of France, 170 km from Paris. This proximity makes Dieppe the nearest beach to the capital. It's well-connected to major cities in the region by an extensive network of motorways. Dieppe has a cross-channel connection with Newhaven, making it possible to reach England in four hours from France via Transmanche Ferries.

The name "Dieppe" derives from the English word "deep", a reference to the deep riverbed carved by the Arques in the plateau of the Caux region. This name was bestowed by the Normans in the 6th and 7th centuries. A city rich in history, Dieppe has endured various wars that caused significant damage, but it has also been fortunate to have the support of kings and leaders who enabled its reconstruction. As a coastal town, its port was bustling thanks to shipowners, which established Dieppe among the premier markets in France. The English seized Dieppe in 1420, but Captain Desmarets, assisted by the people of Dieppe, retook control in 1453 and constructed a grand castle on the cliff. The 16th century was a challenging time for Dieppe due to religious and civil wars, and in 1668, thousands of residents succumbed to the plague. The city was devastated by an Anglo-Dutch fleet in 1694.

Following this destruction, the city was rebuilt by the engineer Ventabren. However, many years later, World War II brought new challenges. A significant military operation, "Operation Jubilee", was carried out on August 19, 1942, with Dieppe serving as the primary battleground between the Allies and enemy forces aiming to invade the country. This operation resulted in over 1,000 deaths (around 900 of them Canadians), two thousand prisoners, roughly 1500 wounded, the loss of a hundred planes, and the destruction of numerous buildings, including the Berkeley destroyer. Today, Dieppe has been restored, but still bears the marks of the wars and struggles it has endured.

August 19, 1942 Memorial

This memorial was established in honor and remembrance of all the soldiers who lost their lives in Operation Jubilee. Located in the Italian-style Little Theatre, the memorial houses various mementos of those brave individuals, including uniforms, photographs, personal belongings, and newspapers. The public can visit the memorial from the end of March until the end of September.

Alabaster Coast
