History of the Girodet Museum

The Girodet Museum, situated in the old Durzy hotel in Montargis, is a tribute to the life and work of Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, who was born in Montargis in 1767. Initially known as the "Museum of Fine Arts of Montargis," the museum was renamed the "Musée Girodet" in 1967 to honor the famous Neoclassical painter Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson. From that point onward, the museum has displayed ancient works, focusing mainly on the paintings of Girodet and his contemporaries.

Exploring the Musée Girodet in Montargis

At the end of the 19th century, the museum started collecting ancient art. Displayed among these collections are Gallic pieces from a small black pottery vase discovered at the foot of the castle in 1899. The discovery of these eight pieces demonstrates that Montargis was once a natural crossing point and a commercial axis between the Seine and the upper course of the Loire.

The museum houses Girodet's early history paintings such as "La Mort de Camille, 1785" and "Mustapha, 1819" along with other mature works. Visitors can delve into the highlights of his career, appreciate his drawing skills, and explore his interest in illustration.

The Girodet Museum in Montargis also showcases twenty-seven paintings and several hundred drawings by the renowned painter Girodet. It previously collected paintings from world-famous artists like Francisco de Zurbaran, Adriaen van Ostade, and Frans II Francken. In addition to Girodet's works, you will find other contemporary paintings by François-Louis Dejuinne, Charles Gleyre, François Bonvin, and Théodore Géricault, along with sculptures and bronzes by various artists.

The museum is open to the public all year round from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., except on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.
