Conflans-Sainte-Honorine’s history and its surroundings

Conflans-Sainte-Honorine is a river town with a world-renowned port of barges. The inland waterways influence the economic and demographic history of this commune of Yvelines (78). The name of the commune relates the story of a martyr known as Honorina. The city of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, with its 231st place in the ranking of French municipalities in terms of demographics, counted more than 31 467 inhabitants in the 1999 census. Located at the confluence of the Seine and the Oise, the city once sheltered the relics of Saint Honorine, brought back to the IXth century of a famous abbey of the Seine-Maritime. At the time of the Norman invasions, the city suffered looting which incited the monks to protect the most precious objects and relics. Built on the right bank of the Seine, it stretches along the river for nearly three kilometers, from the distance of Gaillon to that of Fin d'Oise and has its houses staggered on a cliffside in front of the beautiful forest of Saint-Germain. It is bounded on the north by Eragny, on the east by Herblay, on the south by Achères from which it is separated by the Seine, on the west by Andrésy and Maurecourt, from which it is separated by the Oise and to the northwest by Neuville. In the nineteenth century, the city situated at the confluence of the Oise and the Seine is the object of research aiming to establish a better way to speak of Conflans. Teachers and intellectuals from the region made an appointment at the request of the Ministry of Education for the preparation of the Universal Exhibitions of 1900 (General Instruction of December 29, 1898).
