History and Surroundings of the Villepinte exhibition Hall
The Villepinte Exhibition Hall is a complex of buildings spread over 135 hectares in the town of Villepinte, located north of Paris in the Seine-Saint-Denis department.
The construction of the exhibition center was entrusted to the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the late 1970s, in partnership with the Palais des Congrès real estate company. From 1980 to 1992, the architect François-Régis Pelletrat and his architecture firm CAR designed and built 240,000 square meters of buildings, including the 300-meter long main gallery and three conference centers with several exhibition halls. The inauguration of the site took place in December 1982, although construction continued for another decade. Since its creation, the usable exhibition area has increased from 70,000 square meters in 1982 to 242,000 square meters in 2010, with nine halls, and is expected to gradually reach 350,000 square meters, encroaching on the territory of the nearby town of Tremblay-en-France.
The Villepinte exhibition center is a popular venue for international conferences and congresses, and is also known as the Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Center. It is the largest exhibition center in France and the first in Europe, attracting over 2 million visitors in 2016, including thousands of professionals. In addition to hosting exhibitions for professional audiences, the venue also hosts events for non-professional audiences, as well as political, religious, and other conferences on various topics. The center is conveniently located less than 30 km from Paris, 10 km from Le Bourget Airport, and a 15-minute drive from Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport.
According to its etymology, Villepinte is derived from the Latin "villa picta", which refers to a highly decorated and fabulously well-furnished residence in ancient architecture. In the 18th century, the country of L'Aulnoye was described as a small paradise located to the west of Paris, on the road to Meaux, with green parks and vestiges of the old forest of Bondy, including the Tussion Woods and the Sevran Powder Mill Forest Park, separated by the Paris to Hirson railway line and the Ourcq Canal. The Seine-Saint-Denis department is also home to another famous fairground, Le Bourget, located within the Bourget airport.
