What is the story behind this airport serving 315 cities worldwide ?
Faced with an imminent saturation of Paris-Orly and Paris-Le Bourget airports, the construction of a new airport became necessary in 1962. In an attempt to ease the controversy, the government clearly designated three airport nuisance zones in March 1972. Paris CDG was approved by the public utility authority in the late 1960s, and the expropriation of land for the project took place in 1972. However, rumors about the nature of the project and vague government information fueled local and departmental disputes.
The construction faced fierce resistance from the municipality of Roissy-en-France and other villages, which would be affected by the project. The arrival of construction machinery and significant damage to the streets of Roissy led to increased opposition. Following an interministerial decree published on June 16, 1964, Paris Nord Airport was established in an agricultural area of Pays de France, 25 km northeast of Paris, in the territory of Roissy-en-France. However, obtaining the building permit took about ten years due to refusals.
The airport was officially inaugurated on March 8, 1974, with Prime Minister Pierre Messmer in attendance. The first passengers boarded at Roissy Airport on March 14, 1974. At that time, traffic was projected to double every five years, reaching 12 million passengers by 1975-1980. On July 25, 2000, Air France Flight 4590, carrying the supersonic Concorde, caught fire on takeoff and crashed into a hotel in the town of Gonesse, killing 113 people. Six years later, a memorial honoring the tragedy was inaugurated by the CEO of Air France near the cargo area south of the airport.
Roissy CDG Airport celebrated its fortieth anniversary on March 8, 2014. A history file compiled by Aéroports de Paris highlights the key dates, milestones, and characteristics of this airport platform. Roissy CDG provides a significant number of connecting flights in Europe, second only to London's Heathrow International Airport. It is also one of the most important airports in the world, with more than 315 cities served worldwide.
