In Haute Normandie, the port of Le Havre is ranked first French port. It is thus constructed on a military and political vision. To pay tribute to François I who had instituted a maritime establishment in the city, Le Havre was initially named Franciscopolis or Franchise city. However, the old chapel of Our Lady of Grace was baptized Havre de Grace. In February 1517, the Salamandre continues to embellish the seaport of Haute-Normandie. The city of Le Havre suffered a significant destruction during the night of 5 September 1944 but at present it does not seem to be visible anymore because it was rebuilt and classified as a world heritage by UNESCO. However, its history continues : it is made unique by the creation of the ex-nihilo by the royal power in order to be commercially link with the New World, another evolution also thanks to its relation with America, the port of Le Havre Becomes one of the most important in the Hexagon. Then, thanks to the link with the United States, the port of Le Havre finds more and more its magnitude. However, the Second World War is a topic that presents itself as an opportunity for the city to be reinstituted and also to enlarge its port which was detached from the city. Indeed, the port is again struck by the oil shock of 1973 and as a result, it faces Antwerp, Amsterdam, Hamburg and so on. Le Havre: ranked first city of Normandy with 174,156 occupants. In the Middle Age, the mouth of the Seine was influenced by the ports of Harfleur and Honfleur. As a result, the emergence of Port Havre which later became the royal city in the 16th century is supported by their sinking. Since the eighteenth century, exchanges between the ship owners and the colonies grew rich, thus procuring an unprecedented success. It is for this reason that a new city is instituted in the North of Le Havre by Louis XVI. In 1852, the population of Le Havre became more and more numerous. This is why the walls have been demolished and have been renovated by large avenues, the neighbouring communes have also been annexed, and all these changes are works of Napoleon III. After the year 1944, the transformation of the 150 hectares of the city center was entrusted to the architect Auguste Perret with his ideas of the use of reinforced concrete and some classical vocabularies. All these concepts were inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO. Great architects like Bellarmato, Thibault, Lamandé, Perret, Niemeyer and soon Reichen & Robert as well as Nouvel, etc. Have all participated in the renewal of the city which thus becomes a heritage thanks to the maritime and port activity.
The Benedictine Palace was built in the 19th century on the orders of Alexandre Prosper, a very prosperous trader of the time. The main architect of this work is Camille Albert. He has worked with Ernest Baron as a senior engineer. The main style of the infrastructure is a mix between the Gothic style and the Renaissance style. Alexandre Prosper, a lover of art in all its forms, built this infrastructure to satisfy his passion but also to share it with others. The palace was inaugurated in 1888. After a fire in 1892, the building was reconstructed identically. Its restaurateurs have always kept the same characteristics as at the beginning, as Alexandre-Prosper had always wanted. For lovers of modern art, a special room was set up a hundred years later after the first inauguration. The premises have a museum that includes religious relics and old coins. Other works of art from the 14th to the 16th century are also exhibited at each opening of the palace. The museum offers several pieces for specific themes such as medieval art. One of the most appreciated pieces in the Benedictine Museum is the abbot's room. The most visited works are the windows of King Francis I. The spice room and the distillery are among the particularities of the building. The products exhibited are those which enter into the manufacture of the famous Benedictine. There are thus presented, no less than 27 different spices whose details are on each descriptive sheet. Tastings are also available at the palace shop. Next to this shop is a large room of contemporary type. This room is intended to accommodate modern works by contemporary artists or other cultural events.

On the journey from Charles de Gaulle airport to Le Havre, the Normandy Bridge is an almost unavoidable stopover for all visitors to this region of France. It is a crossing construction that spans the Seine. It is easy to get to Le Havre from Paris on the Normandy highway. The bridge is made of concrete and metal. This joint work is the work of the Gies Pont de Normandie, Monberg and Thorsen companies. The main designer is Virlogeux. The bridge was inaugurated and commissioning on 20 January 1995. In the 1990s it was one of the most imposing structures in the world. It even surpassed the Shanghai Bridge with a range exceeding by nearly 250 m the Chinese bridge. This range was equivalent to 2141.24 m over a width of 23.60 m. The metal structure represents the central part of the assembly. The latter is more than 59 m above the river. One of the engineers' pride, however, is the impressive number of shrouds on the bridge. There are 184 freyssinet cables. Le Havre Chamber of Commerce and Industry is still responsible of the management of the bridge for about ten years. The passage on the bridge is consequently payable for all means of transport other than the two wheels. Obviously, the toll is free for pedestrians who want to take a closer look at this monumental infrastructure. It is also possible to see the work by opting for a sea visit since the bridge allows boats to circulate on the river. Another angle of view that offers another vision of this magic of engineering.
