The castle of Chantilly is located in the Oise, in Hauts-de-France region. Built in the valley of Nonette, a tributary of the Oise, the town of Chantilly developed to the west of the castle during and after the French Revolution. Chantilly is known for its Renaissance castle, but also its whipped cream and its training center for racing horses. The name Chantilly comes from Cantiliacum, from the Gallic forename of Cantilius. During Middle Age, Chantilly was surrounded by moats and a rampart of 7 towers. Built on marshland, it was owned by the Butler Senlis until the 14th century. Pierre d'Orgemont begins the reconstruction of the castle in 1386, when the latter was put on sale, consecutively to a plunder, by the heir of the Senlis. Chantilly remained in possession of the Montmorency family until the seventeenth century. Among the renovations undertaken by the Montmorency are the captaincy or the small castle, the terrace, the garden and the seven chapels. Henry II of Montmorency was executed in 1632 for revolt against the royal authority. His property is confiscated by Louis XIII, who acquires the castle for his hunting. In 1643, Chantilly was ceded to the house of Conde, the younger branch of the house of Bourbon. The present castle is a reconstruction dating from the 19th century. In 1834, the lawn of Chantilly welcomes its first horse races, it is at this time that the city becomes a holiday resort. Since then, horse shows have played a major role in the local economy.
