The Chantilly Castle is located in Oise, in the Hauts-de-France region. Built in the Nonette Valley, a tributary of the Oise, the town of Chantilly developed to the west of the castle during and after the French Revolution. Chantilly is known for its Renaissance castle, as well as its whipped cream and its horse-racing training center. The name "Chantilly" originates from "Cantiliacum," derived from the Gallic name Cantilius.

During the Middle Ages, Chantilly was fortified with moats and a seven-tower rampart. Constructed on marshland, it was owned by the Butler Senlis until the 14th century. Pierre d'Orgemont began the reconstruction of the castle in 1386 when the property was put on sale following a plunder, by the Senlis heir.

Chantilly remained in the possession of the Montmorency family until the seventeenth century. The Montmorency undertook several renovations, including the captaincy or the small castle, the terrace, the garden, and the seven chapels. Henry II of Montmorency was executed in 1632 for rebelling against royal authority. His property was confiscated by Louis XIII, who acquired the castle for his hunting purposes.

In 1643, Chantilly was transferred to the House of Conde, the younger branch of the House of Bourbon. The present castle is a 19th-century reconstruction. In 1834, Chantilly's lawn welcomed its first horse races, turning the city into a holiday resort. Horse shows have since played a major role in the local economy. On race days, up to 20,000 bettors converge on Chantilly.

The estate's heir, King Louis-Philippe I's son, Henri d'Orléans, installed his collection of paintings and old books here before bequeathing it to the Institute of France. During the 19th century, aristocratic families, high bourgeois, and artists settled and built villas and castles around Chantilly. The commune grew in the inter-war period.

During the Second World War, Chantilly's large stables were used as a veterinary hospital. The city was liberated with the arrival of American tanks on August 31, 1944.
