Derived from the Latinized Gallic name "Belena", the source at the origin of the village, Beaune refers to Belenos, the Gallic god of living waters. The name Beaune was first documented in the Merovingian period (481-751). Located in the Côte-d'Or department and the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, Beaune lies 45 kilometers south of Dijon and 150 kilometers from Lyon. It's the second most populous municipality in its department and the 8th largest city in Burgundy. The city's heritage is rich in Romanesque and neo-Gothic architecture. Among its prized historical assets, Beaune boasts one of the first French monuments inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List: the Fontenay Abbey. Following the departure of the monks at the time of the French Revolution, the abbey was restored by the Aynard family, descendants of the Montgolfier brothers, who took up residence there.
Attractions and Recognition
Beaune distinguished itself from the 15th century with the Hôtel-Dieu, established by Nicolas Rolin. Also known as the Hospices de Beaune, this facility served as a refuge for the needy. Beaune is also widely known as the capital of Burgundy wines. Every third weekend in November, the city organizes an auction of the local grands crus, with part of the proceeds going to charity, continuing the humanitarian tradition of the Rolin family. Beaune's floral parks have earned the city several awards, and its parks, gardens, and roses have garnered the distinction of being a 'garden city'. Among these blooming areas, the Square of the Lions, Saint-Jacques Park, and the Greenery Theater are not to be missed.
