History and Location

Derived from the Latinized Gallic name "Belena", the source at the origin of the village, Beaune refers to Belenos, the Gallic god of living waters. The name Beaune was first documented in the Merovingian period (481-751). Located in the Côte-d'Or department and the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, Beaune lies 45 kilometers south of Dijon and 150 kilometers from Lyon. It's the second most populous municipality in its department and the 8th largest city in Burgundy. The city's heritage is rich in Romanesque and neo-Gothic architecture.
