History of Abbaye de la Ferté

The Abbaye de la Ferté is situated in the heart of Burgundy, in La Ferté-sur-Grosne, a municipality of Saint-Ambreuil, in the department of Saône-et-Loire, France. As the oldest Cistercian abbey preceding three other abbeys, namely Pontigny, Clairvaux, and Morimond, it holds great historical significance. The Abbey of La Ferté was the first foundation of Saint-Étienne in 1113 and became entangled in conflicts between the Duke of Burgundy, Hugues III, and the Counts Gérard de Mâcon and Guillaume de Chalon from 1116 to 1166. In 1415, the Abbey of La Ferté was fortified with the construction of a wall containing a single door accessed by a drawbridge. Unfortunately, in 1570, the troops of Admiral Gaspard II de Coligny set fire to the abbey, resulting in the destruction of most of the buildings. Only the church, sacristy, chapter house, and one adjacent room managed to survive the blaze. Following the French Revolution, this first daughter abbey of Cîteaux became the birthplace of a family of scientists and inventors, and the shaded park with its ancient trees became a favorite play area for their young descendants. The abbey palace stands as a testament to the old monastery and serves as a link between two distinct narratives that unfolded within its walls. While the church no longer exists today, the magnificent abbey palace remains intact, and since 1993, it has been classified as a historical monument.
