History of Chantilly: its modernization and traces of ancient stables
Urban Development and Housing in Chantilly
Chantilly is a town with a relatively recent urban layout, with the majority of its significant development and modernization projects happening around two hundred and fifty years ago. During this period, previous gardens were sold to private entities, leading to the construction of villas, contemporary homes, and apartment buildings. Post-1799, Chantilly experienced substantial expansion. The majority of residences, 92.4%, are main homes, and over half of these are occupied by tenants. On average, homes in Chantilly have 3.5 rooms. The town also provides 1,115 social housing units.
Despite the city's modernization, remnants of the old stables that played a significant role in the town's prevalent equestrian tradition remain visible.
Historical Background of Chantilly
During the Stone Age and Iron Age, there were no traces of human occupation. The first artifacts, dated back to the Gallo-Roman period, were discovered much later. Some of the oldest relics found in the area include several 7th-century Merovingian tombs.
A strong house was reported to exist on the present site of Chantilly in 1227. A century later, mentions of the Chantilly Castle started appearing, with its construction completed in 1394. Despite attempts by the Anglo-Burgundian invaders to besiege the castle in 1421, they were unsuccessful. However, the castle later fell into the hands of invaders to spare its inhabitants
Chantilly's Status as a Commune
The town of Chantilly developed from what was once the estate of the castle. Chantilly acquired the status of a commune during the French Revolution. By the end of the 17th century, the castle was sold in lots, such as the vegetable garden and the waterfalls garden. After the invasions and a series of lootings, the castle was refurbished.
Modern Chantilly Castle and Name Origin
The existing version of this ancient medieval fortress was constructed in 1882, following Renaissance guidelines. Having been renovated in the 19th century, the castle has also undergone influences of eclectic architecture. The name "Chantilly" originates from the Gallic name "Cantilius". After a convention was held encouraging cities with feudal-era names to adopt different denominators, the town received the name "Champ-Libre".
What is there to see in Chantilly: domain, garden at the west of the castle, park for all ages ?
The Chantilly domain is a national property that houses the heritage of Prince D'Orléans. Among the invaluable assets of the domain are The Elevator, which is municipalized, and The Chantilly Porcelain Factory. The factory was managed by the Englishman Christopher Potter from 1792 to 1806, followed by the Cotton Mill and the Painted Canvas Factory, the Richard-Lenoir Hydraulic Machine, and, added in 1885, a laundry mechanized by King Louis-Philippe Duc D'Aumale. These activities came to an end in 1987.
Pavilion of the Manse
Also known as The Princes’ Mill, the Manse Pavilion is an annex to the Chantilly estate. Constructed in 1678 by a cousin of King Louis XIV, its "machine that plays the Great Waters" was used to supply basins, fountains, waterfalls, and water jets that decorated the garden to the west of the castle.
Astérix Park, suitable for all ages, is open every year from April 2nd to November 2nd. Construction of this theme park started in the summer of 1987, and it welcomed its first visitors two years later. The park has a capacity of 20,000 people and sprawls over 22,000 hectares of landscaped land. Approximately twenty of the main attractions require a minimum height of 1m.
Depending on your preferences and your profile, the park can offer family tours, small Gallic tours, or thrilling tours. Astérix Park is open from 10 am to 6 pm on weekdays, and from 10 am to 10 pm on weekends. There is one exceptional day in October when night sessions are also held. For practical reasons and maintenance, the amusement park cannot stay open beyond midnight.
The park offers adult and child (3 to 11 years old) admission rates, with children under 3 years old enjoying free admission. If you bring pets, the park has a kennel located outside the park that you can use for a small fee. Astérix Park is located in Plailly, not far from Chantilly. The entrance to the park is between exit 7 and exit 8 of the A1 towards the city, from Paris.
