The Notre-Dame Cathedral of Bayeux

This cathedral is a blend of Romanesque and Norman Gothic architecture, including flamboyant and radiant Gothic styles. Recognized as one of the historical heritages of Bayeux, the cathedral's construction began in the eleventh century and concluded in the fifteenth. The cathedral was dedicated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror and Queen Matilda. Its varied architecture is visible from the Norman Gothic chevet to the Romanesque towers and the Gothic art of the five porches. Above the central porch is the gallery of bishops. The cathedral is crowned by the renowned "Bayeux Tapestry".

The Bayeux Tapestry

This secular piece of Romanesque art, believed to have been created by Queen Matilda of Flanders, narrates the Battle of Hastings, the encouragement of the fighters, the authority of Bishop Odon of Bayeux directing the soldiers, and the boats loaded with troops and knights. Originally exhibited in Notre Dame Cathedral, it now resides in the "Center of William the Conqueror" and was inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World register in 2007.

Housed in the Hotel du Doyen since 2013, the MAHB exhibits a range of art, from Queen Matilda's medieval works to the Romanesque period (Archaeology, Painting, Graphic Art, Art Objects, Bayeux Lace, Bayeux Porcelain).

The Floral Garden

Spread over about 2 hectares, the Bayeux public garden showcases the floral beauty and history of the city. Among its many features is the renowned "weeping beech", labeled a "remarkable Tree of France" in 1932 and covering an area of 1,250 square meters.
