The creation of a new seaport and city in his Duchy of Normandy was commissioned by François I in December 1516. Bonnivet executed the King's order on February 22, 1517, enlisting masons and laborers from Normandy to commence construction two months later. Originally a commercial port, Le Havre Harbor transitioned into a military harbor during Richelieu's time. The harbor grew significantly important to Le Havre's economy with the arrival of numerous ships from America and India, enhancing the exchange and introduction of new materials and foods.

In the early 19th century, each level was assigned a specific purpose: receptions on the first, work on the second, family on the third, and recreation on the fourth. The ground floor and the first floor were connected by two staircases. A unique characteristic of the Maison de l'Armateur museum is its spatial organization - its 20 rooms are aligned around an octagonal light well. The compact nature of the rooms is offset by mirrors, and the flooring is adorned with exotic wood.

The construction of the Saint Joseph Church in Le Havre spanned six years, from 1951 to 1957, under the stewardship of architect Auguste Perret. This iconic edifice is regarded as one of the architectural masterpieces of the twentieth century, built on 6.24-meter squares, which represent the maximum span of a concrete beam. On June 14, 1944, a US bomb damaged part of the nave and the western facade, and the explosion brought down the temporary bell tower. However, the bells remained intact despite their fall due to their small size. On September 5, 1944, another bombardment entirely destroyed the remaining sections of the church. Only a few statues and two bells survived the devastation. Following the bombing, Perret, in collaboration with R. Audigier, designed the new church, which was completed in 1959.
