Following the First World War, six American military cemeteries were established on French soil. Among these, the one situated behind Bois Belleau, north of Château-Thierry in the southern part of the Aisne department, holds significant historical value.

The Roots of Belleau American War Cemetery

The Belleau American War Cemetery marks the site of the first major and decisive engagement of the American military during the First World War. This U.S. military cemetery, spanning over 21.25 hectares, is the final resting place for 2,289 American military casualties who fell during the war. The majority of these soldiers died in the summer of 1918 during the battles of Bois Belleau and in the Marne valley. The chapel's walls bear the names of 1,060 soldiers whose bodies were never found or identified. Bronze rosettes are placed near the names of the missing soldiers whose bodies were later discovered, while 251 markers indicate the graves of "unknown" soldiers.

What Can Be Discovered at Belleau American War Cemetery?

Every year, the Belleau American War Cemetery hosts a Memorial Day ceremony in remembrance of the soldiers who fell during the war and the intense combat that took place between 1914 and 1918. U.S. Marines are present for this annual commemoration. The site features several First World War cannons, which served as key elements in the bloody battle often referred to as the "Battle of the Marne". A museum in the village, named "Belleau 1914-1918", tells the story of this conflict that led to many American casualties.

The general shape of the cemetery resembles a 'T', with a chapel slightly dominating the crossbar. Reflecting French Romanesque architecture, this chapel was built by the 2nd American Division to defend Bois Belleau, which is why it rises to over 24 meters. Every detail on the chapel bears significance - the sculptures of men's and women's heads beneath the tower openings, for instance, represent an airman, a driver, a nurse, and four soldiers.
