Discover the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles
Discover the awe-inspiring Hall of Mirrors, also known as the Galerie des Glaces, a leading attraction in Versailles and a must-visit for any tourist in France. Each year, the grand Château de Versailles draws more than 7 million visitors from all corners of the world, a great many of them specifically coming to marvel at the famous Hall of Mirrors. For more than three centuries, this architectural wonder has consistently captured the imagination of all who witness its splendor.
The Hall of Mirrors and the Reputation of Versailles
The Hall of Mirrors undoubtedly ranks among the most treasured gems in Versailles and, by extension, the entirety of France. Constructed under the skilled hands of architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart and painter Charles Le Brun, the realization of its design took at least three years. With a height of 73 meters and a width of 10.50 meters, the Hall is so vast that it instills a sense of awe in every visitor. The Gallery features 17 windows offering views of the château's verdant courtyard and is adorned with 350 resplendent mirrors. The rays of the sun flood through these expansive windows, causing the spectacular chandeliers to shimmer in a dazzling display of light. More than 1000 square meters of the ceiling is embellished with extraordinary paintings, making the Hall of Mirrors a true emblem of pride for the city of Versailles.
The Historical Significance
Architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart drew inspiration for the Hall from various galleries, such as those at the Château de Clagny, a favorite of Madame de Montespan, and others found at the Château de Saint-Cloud and the Hôtel de Toulouse. Mansart conceived the idea for this project and presented it to King Louis XIV in 1679. As described by Emmanuelle Lequeux in her work, "Le Jeu royal des illusions": "The Hall of Mirrors is a stroke of genius by Mansart. Inspired by glass cabinets, the architect revolutionized the scale and effects: passers-by are reflected, as the image of the flower beds and the garden multiplies around them, a thousand times over, by these mirror walls of extraordinary size." The paintings adorning the ceiling, the work of Charles Le Brun, beautifully depict the first 20 years of King Louis XIV's reign, adding to the historical significance of this architectural wonder.
