The Hanging Gardens

Located on the grounds of the decommissioned Sainte-Adresse fort in 1979, the Hanging Gardens are a testament to the city of Le Havre's creative reuse of space. Initially, the local municipality was unsure about the best use for the fort. However, over time, the idea of transforming it into a botanical garden and recreational area took hold. The plan was to create a garden that honored the legacy of botanist-explorers by showcasing plants from four different continents.

The garden officially opened in September 2008, offering a botanical journey through diverse gardens and greenhouses where plants are grouped by geographical origin. These are displayed across the fort's ramparts and within the fort itself.

Recognizing the quality, beauty, and excellent maintenance of the area, the Hanging Gardens were awarded the "Remarkable Garden" label in 2014.

Exploring the Hanging Gardens

The Hanging Gardens of Le Havre cover an impressive 17 hectares, featuring flora from a range of geographical regions, including Australia, America, New Zealand, Mexico, Tasmania, South Africa, Japan, and more.

Notre-Dame cathedral

The history of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Le Havre dates back to the 1520s, when construction work began on a wooden chapel. The construction was completed in 1522, and a few years later, in 1526, Male-Marée decided to build a new chapel. In 1539, a bell tower was added, only to be destroyed by the English in 1563. After the church was looted by the Huguenots in 1575, the decision was made to build a more durable stone church.

Construction took many years, and the church was only completed around 1829, following damage inflicted by British bombing in 1759. The church was designated as a "historic monument" in 1818.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral sustained further damage during bombings in the Second World War and was partially restored in 1949. However, it was only able to reopen for worship in 1952. On May 22, 1974, the restored church was elevated to cathedral status, becoming the Cathedral of the diocese of Le Havre.

Despite the many challenges it has faced over the years, the Notre-Dame Cathedral still houses some of its original furnishings. However, the famed grand organ, presented by Richelieu in 1639 and restored several times in the 19th and 20th centuries, was completely destroyed in the bombings of September 6, 1944. The organ's casing was restored in 1980.

One notable feature of the cathedral is Henri IV's stained glass window. It has undergone several reconstructions and provides a glimpse into the skills of the 19th-century glassmakers who worked in the cathedral's workshop.
