Located on the grounds of the decommissioned Sainte-Adresse fort in 1979, the Hanging Gardens are a testament to the city of Le Havre's creative reuse of space. Initially, the local municipality was unsure about the best use for the fort. However, over time, the idea of transforming it into a botanical garden and recreational area took hold. The plan was to create a garden that honored the legacy of botanist-explorers by showcasing plants from four different continents.
The garden officially opened in September 2008, offering a botanical journey through diverse gardens and greenhouses where plants are grouped by geographical origin. These are displayed across the fort's ramparts and within the fort itself.
Recognizing the quality, beauty, and excellent maintenance of the area, the Hanging Gardens were awarded the "Remarkable Garden" label in 2014.
Exploring the Hanging Gardens
The Hanging Gardens of Le Havre cover an impressive 17 hectares, featuring flora from a range of geographical regions, including Australia, America, New Zealand, Mexico, Tasmania, South Africa, Japan, and more.
Venturing into the luminous greenhouses, visitors are treated to a fascinating array of plant species. The collection greenhouses are a particular highlight, housing more than 300,000 fragrant plants. Here, you will find begonias, orchids, carnivorous plants, tiny and giant cacti, and tropical strains all living side by side.
To enhance your visit, the gardens offer workshops on the last Wednesday of every month. These workshops, suitable for both adults and children, are run by a facilitator and a gardener who welcome visitors and share their knowledge about the garden's varied flora.
If you're planning a tour in the area, the Hanging Gardens come highly recommended for their unique mix of history, nature, and engaging activities.
The history of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Le Havre dates back to the 1520s, when construction work began on a wooden chapel. The construction was completed in 1522, and a few years later, in 1526, Male-Marée decided to build a new chapel. In 1539, a bell tower was added, only to be destroyed by the English in 1563. After the church was looted by the Huguenots in 1575, the decision was made to build a more durable stone church.
Construction took many years, and the church was only completed around 1829, following damage inflicted by British bombing in 1759. The church was designated as a "historic monument" in 1818.
The Notre-Dame Cathedral sustained further damage during bombings in the Second World War and was partially restored in 1949. However, it was only able to reopen for worship in 1952. On May 22, 1974, the restored church was elevated to cathedral status, becoming the Cathedral of the diocese of Le Havre.
Discovering the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Le Havre
Despite the many challenges it has faced over the years, the Notre-Dame Cathedral still houses some of its original furnishings. However, the famed grand organ, presented by Richelieu in 1639 and restored several times in the 19th and 20th centuries, was completely destroyed in the bombings of September 6, 1944. The organ's casing was restored in 1980.
One notable feature of the cathedral is Henri IV's stained glass window. It has undergone several reconstructions and provides a glimpse into the skills of the 19th-century glassmakers who worked in the cathedral's workshop.
The Notre-Dame Cathedral is among several iconic places in the city, along with the Museum of Modern Art André Malraux, the Graville Abbey, and the Maison de l'Armateur (Shipowner's House), that are worth exploring.
The cruise ship terminal
The Le Havre Cruise Terminal, located on the tip of Florida, accommodates cruise ships at the Roger Meunier wharf or the Pierre Callet wharf. Equipped to receive line stops, the terminal offers facilities like check-in desks, a check-in area, a luggage storage area, and a luggage scanner service. These facilities are designed to provide a high-quality service to passengers and crew members. The terminal also features a tourist information point, a customs office, and the Border Police.
Moreover, the cruise terminal provides a relaxation area, a large shop, free WiFi, a defibrillator, and car or bicycle rentals for passengers.
Renovation Projects for Le Havre Cruise Terminal
In 2017, renovations began on the cruise terminal in Le Havre, with the main goal to surpass all records set by the cruise terminal, which included 142 stopovers and approximately 400,000 passengers. As part of the renovations, the passenger reception area was improved, and the hangars at Florida Point were repainted – red on the port side and green on the starboard side – as a tribute to sailors. Additionally, security at the terminal was enhanced.
Le Havre: A Leading Port for Northern Europe Cruises
Le Havre's attraction for cruise passengers is largely due to its geographic location. Positioned between the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, the port is capable of accommodating the largest cruise ships. The variety of maritime and river cruises offered are very appealing. The popularity of cruising in Le Havre is growing, with many cruises making double or even triple stops.
